Antietam Auti Tour Stop 9 - Burnside Bridge (Lower Bridge)

After the battle at the Sunken Road midday, the battle at the Burnside Bridge, known locally as the Rhorbach Bridge, was fought. General Ambrose Burnside, whose name became associated with the bridge, led the left wing of the Army of Potomac which comprised the 9th Corps under Gen. Jacob Cox. On the opposite side the initial defense of this bridge was by regiments from Georgia led by Robert Toombs. These 450 Georgians held off the 9th Corps until ammunition ran low and they could no longer hold their advantage. This delay would allow CSA Gen Hood to arrive on the field later in the afternoon to smash the Union (th Corps push to Sharpsburg.
